2004 Graduate News
Our 9 graduates received 19 acceptances from
major U.S. music colleges and conservatories.
Six received major scholarships.
Eugenia Jeong, piano (Willard Schultz)
will study with Nelita True at Eastman School
of Music.
Brendan Greenstreet, clarinet, (Sean Osborn)
will attend So. Illinois Univ.
Anne Moxon, piano, (Willard Schultz) will attend
Oberlin Conservatory.
Munya Souaiaia, flute, (Bonnie Blanchard) will
attend Barnard and Manhattan School of Music.
Jeffrey Lund, viola, (LeeAnn Morgan) will attend
Brigham Young Univ.
Lisa Noguchi, violin, (Marjorie Kransberg-Talvi)
will attend Univ. of WA to study with Ron Patterson.
Krystal Barghelame, composition/piano, (Sharon
Van Valin) will attend Stanford Univ.
Maria Dance, violin, (Kent Coleman) will attend
Shephard School of Music, Rice Univ.
April 22, 2004
Four Academy violinists performed with the Seattle
Symphony in their Discover Music concert.
Each student performed one of the 'Seasons'
in Vivaldi's Four Seasons.
The Academy Chamber Orchestra
performed in the Sam & Althea Stroum Lobby
prior to the concert.
The Chamber Orchestra and other students performed
on KING FM on the Classic Kid program with Marta
Zekan.
April 13, 2004
Academy students in the Children's program
(ages 5-10) performed before the three Seattle
Symphony's Tiny Tots concerts.
March 2004
Sarah Pizzichemi 16, violin,
Was the only WA state young musicians
who was selected to participate in the National
Youth Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC this
year. Sarah studies violin with Kent Coleman.
March 2004 & May 2004
Mikaela Holland, 12, violin,
was the performer in the Sherman Clay,
Seattle, Noon Series, March 4, with piano collaborator,
Dr. Marilyn Jacobson. Mikaela won the competition
to perform the Saint Saëns Introduction
and Rondo Capriccioso with the Bellevue
Philharmonic on May 1st, 2004. Mikaela studied
with Kent Coleman for 3 years, and is currently
studying with Ron Patterson, Professor of Violin,
Univ. WA. Mikaela has been with the Academy
since age 9, in classes and chamber music ensembles.
Her older brother, Lukas, 'cellist, is also
a long-time Academy student, currently performing
in chamber music ensembles.

ANOTHER SWEEP BY KENT COLEMAN'S VIOLIN STUDENTS.
The 2004 Simon-Fiset String Competition
was held February 10 at First Lutheran Church
of Bothell. The adjudicator was Dr. Maria Sampen,
String Department Head and Assistant Professor
of Violin at the University of Puget Sound.
The Awards Recital featuring the first and second
place winners of both the Simon-Fiset String
Competition and the Simon-Fiset Piano Competition
will be held Saturday, April 24 at 7:00 PM at
Sherman Clay, Seattle.

NW Chopin Festival Winners performed on February
7th.
There were 32 entrants. Awards were made only
to Winners and Honorable Mentions; all seven
of whom are Academy students.

Division C First (tie): Sang-Hee Min (Michiko
Miyamoto) and Joshua Pielemeier (Judy Baker);
Honorable Mention: Jessica Huang (Willard Schultz)
Division D First: Eugenia Jeong (Willard Schultz),
Honorable Mentions: Rebecca Jordan (Joan Schoepflin)
and Nathaniel LaNasa (Ken Moses).

Eugenia Jeong, piano, teacher: Willard
Schultz. January 2004.
Eugenia was chosen as one of 125
finalists, from 6,500 applicants, in the
National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts,
to receive a fully paid trip, while participating
in the Arts Week in Miami. Eugenia
finished in 2nd place, received a $1500 cash
prize, and was invited to audition at The Juilliard
School in March 2004.

Winners May 2003
Four of the six concerto winners were students
of Academy Faculty, Kent Coleman, Willard Schultz,
and David Tonkonogui:
Eugenia Jeong, Piano, Jun Yong Chung, Violin, Rachel Wong,
Violin, Camden Shaw, Violoncello.
The other two winners were Haemi Shin, Flute,
and Jonathan Lo, Cello.
The only Festival Medal was awarded to Eugenia Jeong, piano (Willard Schultz).
Congratulations to all the winners
and their teachers! Adjudication standards
for the Festival were at the highest level seen
in years, making these wins even more meaningful.
Graduates
2003: Marc Macauley and
Lena Nietfeld.
Marc (composition and piano) received 7 acceptances
and offers of scholarship from major music colleges
and conservatories. He will attend Eastman Conservatory
of Music on scholarship as a composition major.
Marc was an ASCAP Young Composer at age 14,
a BMI Young Composer at age 16, and received
a 2nd ASCAP Young Composer Award this year.
These awards are for composers under age 30.
Marc has a 3 page resume of awards and accomplishments,
and was also a MTNA Concerto Winner (piano)
at age 14.
Lena Nietfeld (composition
and clarinet) received 4 acceptances and offers
of scholarship from major music colleges and
conservatories. She will attend University of
Michigan on scholarship to study composition
with Bright Sheng.
Congratulations and best wishes to Marc and
Lena.

wonderful announcements. We did not have the
volunteer time to update this page.
We have long lists from
studio teachers and families of winners in SYAMFA,
WSMTA, Simon Fiset, Horsfall,
PAFE, Olympia, Tacoma, and other area competitions.
Academy students won opportunities to perform
with orchestras thoughout the Puget Sound area,
on KING FM, and in invitational private recitals.
They have also been accepted at prestigious
summer music programs this year, such as Aspen,
Interlochen, and Adamant (piano camp). |

Tied for first place in the sr. high
division of the Masterworks Chorale Kids Talent
Competition, to play a piece in a Masterworks
Chorale concert during their upcoming season.
April 2003 played The Lark Ascending at
the Governor's Mansion, Olympia,
Junior League Luncheon. The first lady's son,
Dylan Locke, came running up to his mother
during the piece and sat on her lap, watched
and listened. Mrs. Locke announced after the
piece that Dylan was mesmerized by the music.
May 2003, performed the the solo violin part
of Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 with the Capital
Area Youth Symphony at the Washington Center
for the Performing Arts in Olympia as winner
of the CAYSA Concerto Competition.
Rachel Wong: Thursday, May
8, at 12:30 pm, interviewed live on KSER 90.7
FM as a winner of the Seattle Young Artists
Music Festival Concerto Competition and winner
of the Everett Youth Symphony Concerto Competition.
Performed the first and second movements of
the Mozart Concerto No. 3 with the Everett
Youth Symphony on Tuesday, May 20 at 7:00
pm. at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo as first
place winner of the EYSO Concerto Competition.
Jun Chung:
Friday, May 16, at 9:00 pm Jun performed on
the Classic King "FM 98.1 Live! By George"
program as a winner of the Seattle Young Artists
Music Festival Concerto Competition.
Rachel Wong and Jun Chung:
Sunday, May 18, at 2:30 pm, performed with
Philharmonia Northwest, Roupen Shakarian,
Conductor, as winners of the Seattle Young
Artists Music Festival Concerto Competition.
Nicolai Wohns performed the
entire Vieuxtemps Concerto No. 5 with the
Tacoma Youth Symphony as first place winner
of their concerto competition at the Landmark
Convention Center (Temple Theater) in Tacoma.
Mikaela Holland made her
solo debut performing mozart' 'Turkish"
Violin Concerto in A Major with Seattle Youth
Symphony's Classical Orchestra, and with the
Northwest Sinfonietta in 2002. In 2003 Mikaela
was Alternate First Winner in the WA state
level of MTNA
