2011-2012 Audition & Placement Dates for New Students.

Saturday, September 10, 11:30AM - 5:30 PM.
Additional early/late audition dates and times may be announced later.
Appointments will be set by the Academy as applications for new students are received,
and parents will be notified of the date and time of their appointments.
Only Audition and Placement Fees (below) are paid at that time.

A returning AMN student rarely needs a new audition, and usually only pays the annual Registration Fee in their total tuition.
ACO students re-audition every year for seating.

Young Academy Pianist

Children and Junior Division Placement Interviews (AMN)

Auditions are not required for admission to the this program.
Children (4-8) and Juniors (9-12) and their parents meet with faculty members for a fifteen minute placement interview to help Academy faculty assign appropriate levels
for each new student.

Pre-College Division Auditions and Placement (AMN)
New Students (13-18) wishing to enter into the Academy Pre-College division are required to audition. In the fifteen-minute audition, students are asked to play and/or sing scales and arpeggios, sight-read, and play a prepared piece (or excerpt). The interview process helps faculty assess the appropriate class levels for theory and ear training, and give us an opportunity to get to know the student's goals and performance preferences.
Auditions are not required for returning students, unless they were so notified in the prior year, when they were in a tentative status and needed to be re-evaluated for work at this level.

Composition students must be competent on one instrument, and must submit samples of their own compositions as part of their audition. Computer printed scores are appreciated, but computer generated compositions are not allowed. Beginning composers are exempt from this submission, but are expected to advance quickly under Academy guidance to remain in the composition program.

If a student wants to participate in an Ensemble, "Ensemble" should be checked on the application. We expect most students will be in an ensemble. Music is all about performance.

Candidates for the more advanced Sonata Literature, Honors Ensemble, or our new Large Ensemble (still untitled) should check those appropriate box(es) on their application. Students at this level are expected to be advanced level performers, regardless of age.

AMN Audition and Placement Interview Fees

These are paid on the day of the audition/interview appointment.
Siblings pay separate fees, but are scheduled consecutively for family convenience.

Children (ages 4-8): $25.
Individual placement interviews with faculty for each new child and his/her parent.
Includes choral placement option for ages 6-8. It is very unusual for children under 8 to be ready for ensemble work, but placement can be made if appropriate and suitable partners are available.

Juniors (ages 9-12):
$25 for class placement only, without instrumental ensemble audition.
Includes choral placement option.

$45 with instrumental ensemble audition. Faculty can endorse or recommend delaying instrumental ensemble auditions based on what they learn/hear in the placement interview.
Auditions do not guarantee ensemble placement, if the student is not ready to work at this level. Most should be if they have been taking lessons for some time. Studio teachers may also recommend / suggest ensemble placement.

Pre-College/Prep (13-18) : $45
Each new student is heard by 3 jurors; then given theory placement evaluation); followed by a brief meeting with the President.

NEW: Registration Fee for New & Returning AMN students (all ages) $25.
This covers the annual cost of processing each registration form, responding to families, scheduling appointments, and updating email and database information.
This fee will be included in the final tuition total, and is paid with the first payment in Sept.
for each enrolled student.

Academy Chamber Orchestra (ACO) New and Returning students audition for placement and seating in the Academy Chamber Orchestra each year.
See the ACO pages for those fees, which are separate from AMN fees
